Recognizing Signs of Aggression in an Unfamiliar Dog
Dogs can make for amazing pets. They are loyal, loving, and intelligent creatures that can thrive in the right environment. However, dogs that are mistreated or not properly socialized can pose a risk to other pets or even random strangers they may encounter. Every week, there are countless news stories about people being unexpectedly attacked by aggressive dogs. While nothing can completely eliminate your chances of encountering a dangerous dog, recognizing common signs of aggression can keep you and your loved ones from being bitten.
In this article, we discuss common warning signs of aggressive behavior in dogs. We hope this article reduces the risk of you or your child being harmed due to someone else’s negligence.
Why Do Dogs Exhibit Aggressive Behavior?
Understanding why dogs may exhibit dangerous behavior can help you avoid common triggers, thus significantly lowering your chances of being bitten when encountering an unfamiliar animal. Some of the reasons a dog may exhibit an unfriendly demeanor include:
- Fear Aggression: If a dog feels afraid or threatened, they may react by attacking.
- Territorial Aggression: Dogs are very protective over spaces they deem their own. They may attempt to defend their yard, home, or even a specific area within their house, such as the space around their bed.
- Idiopathic Aggression: In some rare cases, dogs may suddenly and unpredictably attempt to attack a person or another animal. The cause of this form of aggression is not known.
- Predatory Aggression: Dogs may attempt to chase or attack smaller animals that resemble prey.
- Possessive Aggression: In addition to defending their spaces from perceived threats, dogs may also attempt to protect food, toys, or other items.
Warning Signs of an Imminent Dog Attack
In some cases, dog attacks may come out of the blue, with little-to-no warning before you find yourself bitten. However, in most cases, dogs will display at least some warning signs before reverting to an outright attack. If you see a dog displaying any of the following behaviors, slowly and calmly retreat out of harm’s way.
- Growling: Not surprisingly, growling is one of the most common signs that you may be in danger. When a dog is threatened or feels aggressive, it may begin to growl. In some cases, the dog may also display stiff body posture, show its teeth, or raise its hackles.
- Snapping: When a dog begins to make a quick biting action, this is a surefire sign that it is willing to attack you.
- Lunging: Lunging often accompanies growling and snapping. Lunging is a sharp, sudden forward motion that may or may not include an attempt to bite.
- Chasing: Some dogs may attempt to chase as a type of play, but if the dog is laser-focused on its target this behavior may be a type of aggression.
- Resource guarding: Dogs that feel territorial or insecure about resources (such as a pet that is consistently underfed) may attempt to protect food, toys, territory, or even people (out of jealousy). This behavior can become incredibly dangerous and should be addressed by the owner as soon as it is detected.
What to Do if a Dog Bites You
Dog bites can be incredibly painful and, in some very rare cases, life-threatenting. If you’ve been bitten by a dog, the first thing you need to do is clean the wound with warm water and soap. You can then control any bleeding by applying a sterile bandage or clean cloth. You should seek medical care after cleaning the wound and stopping the bleeding. Dogs have a lot of bacteria in their mouths, which can be transferred via their bite. You may find yourself dealing with a serious infection if you are not placed on an appropriate antibiotic treatment.
If you don’t know whether the dog is up-to-date on vaccinations, particularly for rabies, get medical care immediately. Rabies is a rare disease, but it is almost always fatal if transmitted and not treated immediately. Once you’ve seen a doctor, keep the wound clean and dry as it heals to prevent complications.
Stay Safe When Encountering Unfamiliar Dogs
Although it’s a totally natural feeling to want to befriend all the adorable dogs you might encounter on a daily basis, always pay attention to the dog’s mood and any signs that they might not want to reciprocate your friendliness. By being aware of potential signs of danger and maintaining a safe distance from unfamiliar dogs, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from harm.
